When growing indoors in a hydroponic system we use what is referred to as growing medium. In simple terms this takes the place of the soil/dirt used in normal gardening. It is not always there to provide the nutrients/food for the plants, but some just simply to hold the moisture and oxygen needed by the root system to make the plant grow.
